This is an Acheulian Hand Axe from the Lower Palaeolithic, 600 - 700.000 B.C. The Hand Axe is a typical African Acheulian shape, bifacial worked with a once sharp cleaver point on the distal end and a worked rounded base. Continuous retouches on the edges. Perfect typical brownish patina. It is in fine condition (tip missing) with no modern or old damage. The artefact was discovered in 1967 at Erg Belfelfoul, Algeria - Acheulian industry of the Sahara. Hand Axes from that region with the exact site location are very rare. Provenance: from an old Hamburg, Germany collection. The artefact is in very fine condition and measures 114mm long x 74mm wide x 33mm thick.
