This is a late Anglo-Saxon Iron Axe Head, c. 900 to 1000 B.C. A well-formed forged-iron axe head comprised of a circular socketing shaft with a tab protruding from the bottom end of the butt, a sturdy neck, and a broad blade with a sharpened edge. Provenance: Private collection of W.L.C., before 2000. UK art auction. Cf. Smaller blades, such as this, may have been used in battle as a throwing instrument or for hand-to-hand combat. The artefact is in fine condition (a crack to the blade) and measures 103mm wide x 107mm tall.
