This is an Ancient Bronze Figure of Garuda, Northern India (possibly Kausambi), 2nd century B.C. A standing figure of Garuda, the attendant of Vishnu; this time without a snake, with hands joined in a worshiping pose, a pair of raised wings and with a crown on his head. Provenance: from a Canadian Collection, originally acquired from an antique dealer in Allahabad, Northern India. The artefact is in fine condition and measures 50mm tall, 66mm tall including the base.
Cf. Garuda, the vehicle (vahana) of the Hindu God, Vishnu is a mix of human and eagle in form, represents birth and heaven, and is the enemy of all snakes. In Indian depictions of Garuda, only his wings remain from the bird form.
