This is an Indian bronze figure of Shiva as Lord of Dance (Nataraja), 19th century. The upper left hand holds agni (the fire that will destroy the universe), the lower right hand makes abhayamudra (the gesture that allays fear), the dwarf like figure being trampled by his right foot represents apasmara purusha (illusion, which leads mankind astray) and the raised left foot, signifies refuge for the troubled soul. Provenance: from an old Ely, Cambridgeshire Oriental Collection. The artefact is in very fine condition and measures 270mm tall.
