This is an Indian Erotic Wood Carving, c. 18th-19th century from Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. An in the round wood carved architectural panel, part of a temple chariot and featuring an erotic amorous couple set on a plinth. Provenance: from an old Oxford collection. The artefact is in fine condition with wear consistent with age and measures 600mm tall x 140mm wide.

Prastara, the wall portion of the chariot is carved with hundreds of panels with interesting tales to narrate. Most of them figure around the themes of Vishnu and his incarnation. Some themes represent erotic and secular aspects signifying the sacred and profane exist side by side. Scenes depicting child birth indicate the reality of human existence.
