This is an Indian carved hardwood figure group, 19th century. A carved hardwood group of the deity Garuda carrying the god Vishnu. Provenance: From an old Glasgow collection. The artefact is complete, in very fine condition and measures 200mm high.
The Garuda is a legendary bird or bird-like creature in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain mythology. He is variously the vehicle mount (vahana) of the Hindu god Vishnu, a dharma-protector and Astasena in Buddhism, and the Yaksha of the Jain Tirthankara Shantinatha.
