This is an extremely long Viking Axe Head, c.9th-11th century A.D. A very large hand forged iron axehead with long triangular-section narrow blade extending to a narrow curved edge. Provenance: From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. Rare. The artefact is in very fine condition, professionally cleaned and conserved. Weighs 785 grams and measures 364mm (14 1/2"). Footnotes: This form of axehead was probably used in radially-splitting timber to create the overlapping planks of clinker-built ships, or for cutting holes.
