This is a Fayum Neolithic flint Knife, c.4400-4000 B.C., Nabta Playa. A brown tanged leaf-shaped flint knife with a nice desert patina and worn by the wind. There are no alterations, restorations or modern re-chipping. Provenance: ex- German collection (Hamburg). The artefact is in fine condition and measures 57mm x 18mm.
Nabta Playa was once a large internally drained basin in the Nubian Desert, located approximately 800 kilometres south of modern-day Cairo or about 100 kilometres west of Abu Simbel in southern Egypt. Ounan points developed specifically for hunting. The pointed tang allowed them to be rapidly inserted into a reed shaft when the need arose.
