This is a Chinese Neolithic Period two handled pot, Machang Phase, c.2400 to 2000 B.C. This pottery jar was made during the Machang Phase of the Majiayao culture, also known as the Gansu-Yangshao culture, from present day Gansu or Qinghai province. The outer surface and inner mouth have been decorated with geometric patterns using fired-on mineral-based pigments of two different colours. Provenance: From an old London collection; formed before 1980.
There are some chips to the rim and there has been a repair, otherwise, the pot is in fine condition and measures 118mm high x 126mm diameter.
