This is a Bronze Age Urnfield Culture hollow socketed axehead, c.1300 B.C. – 750 B.C. Late Bronze Age culture of central Europe. Provenance: Property of a professional; acquired on the European art market in the 1980s. Although part of the reverse is missing, the artefact is in fine condition, weighs 205gms and measures 97mm long.

The name Urnfield Culture comes from the custom of cremating the dead and placing their ashes in urns which were then buried in fields.
