This is a Senufo Wooden Tribal Mask, Burkina Faso, late 19th – early 20th century. A carved wooden mask with a narrow face, pointed chin, a protruding nose, slit eyes, an open mouth displaying teeth, distended ears, a female figure presented on top and displays some scarification. Provenance: from the Estate of a West Sussex Collection. The artefact is in very fine condition, complete and measures 450mm tall.

Several types of masks are used depending upon the occasion. The Kpelie, a human face with projections all around, is said to remind initiates of human imperfection. Among the Naffara group of the Senufo, masks of similar form but with an interior cavity too small for a human head are carried on the top corner of a rectangular, tent like costume called kagba.
