This is a Romano British Vine Pruning Hook, c. 280 A.D. to c. 410 A.D. A forged iron hook, curved blade, and a tapered rectangular section tang with curved tip to lock on to a wood handle. Excavated / findspot: close to Peterborough. Provenance: Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private archaeological collection. The artefact is in good condition, stabilised and measures 203mm long.
An imperial edict, by the 3rd-century Emperor Probus, in a period with a relatively warm climate, granted permission to the Britons to cultivate vineyards and make wines. Their vineyards were as far north as Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire, with others in Buckinghamshire and Cambridgeshire, and probably many other sites.
