This is a large Cleaver shaped Acheulian Handaxe from the Lower Palaeolithic, 600 - 700.000 B.C. The Handaxe is a typical African Acheulian shape, bifacial worked with a once sharp cleaver point on the distal end and a worked rounded base. Continuous retouches on the edges. Perfect typical brownish patina. It is in fine condition (tip missing) with no modern or old damage. The artefact was discovered in 1967 at Erg Belfelfoul, Algeria - Acheulian industry of the Sahara. Handaxes from that region with the exact site location are very rare. Provenance: from an old Hamburg, Germany collection. The artefact is in very fine condition and measures 185mm long x 95mm wide x 40mm thick.
