This is a Wooden Tribal Helmet Mask (Bolo), Bobo Peoples, Burkina Faso, 19th – early 20th century. A wooden tribal Janus headed helmet mask with a tall median crest, flat nose, heavy eyebrows, small ears and displays scarification. Provenance: Ex-Glasgow Ethnographical Collection; 1940s-1950s. The artefact is in fine condition and measures 272mm tall.

This genre of helmet mask, known as bolo (pl. bole), is worn by blacksmiths at important agricultural celebrations, initiation rites, and funerals in Bobo communities. In performances, bole function primarily to provide entertainment while other, older mask types are considered more sacred and carry greater spiritual weight.
