This is a Luristan Handled Dagger, 8th century B.C. A bronze dagger with lentoid-section blade tapering to a rounded point; the hilt with shallow socket to each side to receive wood or bone scales and lateral flanges. Provenance: Property of a London collector; from her family's private collection; formerly with a London gallery; acquired in the 1990s. Literature: Cf. Khorasani, M. M., Arms and Armour of Iran, Tubingen, 2006, cat.7, for similar example, and fig.4. Footnotes: This example of a flanged hilt dirk was produced from one piece of bronze, meaning that grip and blade were cast together. The openings in the handle were originally adorned with bone or limestone inlays (Khorasani, 2006, cat.13). The artefact is in fine condition and measures 346mm long.
