This is an Ancient Greek, Corinthian Aryballos, c. 600 - 550 B.C. A Corinthian aryballos with a flattened mouth, a round belly and a broad disk-shaped foot, with traces of a design in brown slip on an orange background, banding around the bulbous body. Such vessels served to contain perfume or oil, and are often depicted in vase paintings being used by athletes in the bath or the gymnasium. They are also often found in tombs, as offerings to the deceased. Literature: McManis, Amanda. Perfume Vessels in South-East Italy (2013). p.37, Figure 4.3. Provenance: Ex Private Birmingham Archaeological Collection. The artefact is in fine condition (some chipping) and measures 65mm tall x 60mm diameter.
