This is a Tsonga Wooden Stool from Mozambique. Tsonga stools are still being used in rural African villages. These particular stools are named after the Tonga people who originated in South Africa and overtime migrated north. Nowadays, this people group is referred to as Tsonga in Mozambique, in Zimbabwe – “Tonga”, and in Malawi and Zambia – “Batonga”. Provenance: From an old Shaftesbury, Dorset collection. The artefact is in fine condition and measures 200mm high.
