This is an Ancient Roman discus oil lamp, from Damascus, Syria, 200 - 300 A.D. A mould-made terracotta oil lamp with a flat circular base, curved walls, no handle with angled shoulder and depicting in high relief a Peacock. The oil lamp was discovered in the upper chamber of a tomb on 2 June 1913. Provenance: From the Melville Gray, Bowerswell, Perth Collection amassed before WWII. The artefact is in fine condition, intact, not repaired or restored, (small hole in the discus) the expected wear, some slight rubbing and come with the original ticket. The oil lamp measures 98mm x 90mm x 22mm.
