This is a Russian painted icon, gesso, tempera on wooden panel, 18th century. The Holy Archangel Michael is one of the most celebrated of the Angels and bodiless powers; he is called the Archistrategos, or chief commander, of all the bodiless powers. Archangel Michael is shown in half-length, wearing classical vestments and on the reverse exhibition label with wax stamp. Provenance : from an old York collection. The work is in fine condition for the age and measures 235mm x 200mm.
