This is a Chinese Wood Carved Guan Yin Head, early Qing Dynasty. The head is carved in the round from a single trunk section, the full face with nose flanked by wide arched brows above heavily lidded eyes, the lips gently indented to provide a benevolent expression, the features all framed by pendulous ears and neatly-dressed hair, pulled up beneath an elaborate tiered crown and decorated with polychrome. Provenance: From an old Surrey Oriental Collection formed in the late 1950s – 1960s. The artefact is in fine condition, weighs 922gms and measures 275mm tall.

This sculpture of Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) head was rescued from a collapsing temple. It was beautifully carved with the faded polychrome headdress and a rich patina.
