This is a Majapahit Terracotta Head of a Priest, Majapahit Empire, from the region of Trowulan, Eastern Java, Indonesia, 13th-14th century. A well-modelled terracotta head with reasonably detailed features and wearing an elaborate headdress. Provenance: ex-Mary & Peter White collection. The artefact is in very fine condition and measures 51mm tall.
Cf. The heads are almost always found independently, with no bodies in sight. It is thought that these figures represent offerings to the gods for bountiful harvests.
