This is a Majapahit Terracotta Head of a Woman, Majapahit Empire, region of Trowulan, Eastern Java, Indonesia, 13th-14th century. A well-modelled terracotta head with detailed features and wearing earrings, her hair styled into four buns, one on each side of the head and the last on top. Provenance: ex-Mary & Peter White collection. The artefact is in very fine condition and measures 74mm tall.
Cf. The heads are almost always found independently, with no bodies in sight. It is thought that these figures represent offerings to the gods for bountiful harvests.
